Theme of the month: character

During the month of June, students will focus on Character. Character is defined as the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual that make up someone’s personality. Having good character means that one has admirable traits, such as honesty, responsibility, and courage. Character can be changed and developed. When people develop strong character traits, they discover that their relationships get better and they feel better about themselves. This month we will help students identify their character traits. We will process questions such as: are there some traits they would like to develop further? Our job is to reinforce and teach positive and useful traits in our students, such as self-reliance, perseverance, courage, respect, and responsibility. It is important for staff to role-model positive character traits for our students.

Philosophy Amplification Project:

Stop and Smell the Flowers!

The fourteenth and last highlight of our Philosophy Amplification Project for this school year is Stop and Smell the Flowers. This new station in our 200 cluster is designed as a visual guide to mindful breathing. As students move the butterfly from one end of the mural to the other, they are encouraged to breathe with the “breeze,” experimenting with slower breathing (inhaling for a count of 4, holding for a count of 4, exhaling for a count of 4, and holding for a count of 4).

The APEX Application:

This station is used to notice one’s level of regulation before use and then notice where it is after spending time here. To see how one’s level of regulation is like a breeze, and to notice what scene you see when you think of a relaxing place and how helpful it is to focus on slowing down your breathing.

The Biodevelopmental components are:

Regulation, Physical Dimension, Sensory Dimension and Contact

Summer Family Services

Our Family Therapists continue their hard work throughout the summer months. The team of therapists works to complete the consent forms for the upcoming school year. They meet with each family twice over the summer and maintain communication between the monthly meetings. In addition to the monthly meetings, they develop goals for the upcoming school year for each family they work with.

Please work with your therapist to schedule your summer visits, complete the consent forms, and review the Family Service Plan.

Summer Challenge

As we complete the school year, we want to recognize the hard work that all of the students have put into developing their reading skills this year. This is no small feat, and the effort we saw each and every day was amazing to watch and the growth we saw in their reading development was equally as promising. With all of that hard work, we wanted to give you some resources to help your children keep those hard earned skills.

Research shows that two months of reading skills are lost over the summer if reading isn’t continued. It takes an average of 6 weeks to make up for summer learning loss and research also indicates that learning loss increases as children get older.

With that in mind, please find included in this newsletter, reading lists for you to review and utilize should you choose to do so. These lists are broken into grade level areas: lower elementary, upper elementary, lower secondary and upper secondary.

We hope you find this information helpful. As always, please reach out to us with any questions you may have.

We wish you all a safe, healthy, and happy Summer and look forward to seeing you in the Fall for the start of another wonderful school year!!!
